Haiti
I created this website to raise awareness about and to help Haiti. I've never actually been to Haiti, but I know a few people who have. One of those people would be my Mom. So, I asked her if she could write about her trip and about the country here.
The team of 9 people from Great Bridge Baptist went to Haiti in August, 2011. We partnered with First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. Their pastor had traveled to Haiti after the earthquake and visited the tent cities in Port au Prince. He felt called to help these families. So, the church in Mississippi began a ministry titled Project Haiti. They worked with Thirst No More and Hispaniola Mountain Ministries to acquire land and employ Haitians to build homes, a medical clinic, school, church and a soccer field. When our team arrived in Haiti the medical clinic was almost complete and we began building the first house. The project includes 40 homes. The families that will live in each home have lost their houses to the earthquake.
We learned much about the country and its people while working with the Haitians. The country is a little over 200 years old. It began as a slave colony of France. The slaves revolted and gained their independence. The story is told that in 1807 several Haitian witch doctors make a pact with the devil that if the slaves could gain their independence the nation would worship satan. In 3 years (1810) they gained their independence from France and began to govern themselves. The 200 years was over in 2007 and 3 years later the earthquake happened that destroyed much of their capital city. Many Haitians believe that now they are free from the pact with satan and can now worship the One True God!
Our team worked along side the Haitians in building the first house. They are very hard working people! Many that we met were already believers. They shared with us that they want a better life for their children. The country does not have job opportunities and the government does not offer any of the daily necessities that we take for granted (ie.trash pickup, running water, electricity, indoor plumbing, clean drinking water, health care). This project offers job opportunities for the local men. It has also provided 2 wells that give pure drinking water. The clinic will offer health and dental care to the local people.
We were very blessed to be a part of this ministry. We witnessed first hand how it is bettering the lives of the people and offering hope for their children. Our church continues to support Project Haiti in prayer, donations and future teams that will travel to Haiti to continue building, leading VBS, offering medical care and even soccer clinics for the children! Please continue to pray for Haiti and its beautiful people as they seek to serve God.
